Participative Immigrants or Participative Cultures?

The author claims that there is a certain tendency to participate in voluntary associations, to be found at societal level. Individuals are socialized in such culture and reproduce it. When moving to another country institutionalization effects occur, and a mixture of the two influences governs personal likelihood to participate.

The paper relies mainly on EVS 2008-2009 data, but it combines it with previous waves of the EVS and WVS.

The findings reveal that the culture in the country of current of current residence is more important than the one in the society of origin. Moreover, the effect of the latter disappears in the case of those country who depend on remittances (when more than 4.45% of the GDP is formed by money sent back home by immigrants, the effect of the country of origin becomes null).
